number two eric cantor the majority leader put out a statement putting the onus on president obama and for the reason why there has not been a deal so far. basically saying they can't move forward in the house without some sort of action in the senate the next few days. what they left out of that, unfortunately, is the reason why they are waiting on the senate to do something. the senate coming into session tomorrow, by the way. is that speaker boehner couldn't get enough votes to move forward on a plan to avert the cliff last week. that's why we are where we are right now. the president will be boarding air force one in a few hours. flying overnight back to washington. is he likely to bring together congressional leaders in the next couple days when he he gets back to washington. time is running out, harris. >> harris: no breaking news in any of that. but we did see some today. treasury secretary tim geithner saying we could hit the debt ceiling the day after we follow off the fiscal cliff if no deal is reached. >> that's right. december 31st. a lot going on there. a lot of these

to me. and it says, you know, exactly -- >> even though eric cantor was right there probably helping him out? >> but that's the thing is he had eric cantor there, which should have given him the cover. now, you know, at some point john boehner has to make a decision, which is do i let these people dictate what type of legislation we're going to put to this body, or will i get rid of this informal role that anything i let come to a vote has to have the majority of the majority, which means that a majority of republicans have to vote on the bill for it to pass. because that's really the only resolution to this deal is can he -- will he pass a deal that will have a lot of democratic support in the house? >> and is, as i look at next week and the fiscal cliff presumably happening, going over it, john boehner is supposed to be re-elected speaker on next thursday. >> on the 3rd, yeah. >> is that going to change everything and he's going to say, to hell with this right-wing tail wagging my dog, i don't need you guys anymore? >> no, because the house isn't the only theater of this. there's the s

. that was something that was worked up by him and eric cantor and others. so the real test here and i think challenge the president and john boehner sitting down again over the next three or four days. i think we have a few more days. we go over the cliff on the first but the new congress isn't sworn in until january 3rd. if they can work out, maybe just a small deal now. maybe down payments on cuts. maybe it is protecting, certainly protecting tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses and doing, you know, a few things to medicare, and then that gets us into next year where we can do bigger stuff like corporate tax reform and larger reforms to the tax code. jon: amos, what do you think about that proposal? >> that proposal, the whole situation is telling. we didn't have to be here. we all saw this coming for months. we knew it was coming. doug is right, house republicans did act. they acted to stop the defense cuts and stop the tax hikes. what happened since then, senate democrats have done nothing with it. i think president obama, senator reid, they have to bear some responsibility they hav
